The Music Ministry of St. Valentine

The Choirs need voices!
AND we could use your help.

Winter and Spring 2020
Experience singing in a group.
Don't leave it to someone else!
If you have singing experience of any kind it's a plus.
BUT we CAN teach you the rudiments of chorale singing.
Many of us are amateurs.
We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM (or as announced)
and will sing the 10 AM Sunday morning Mass once we are ready.

Help us to build an even fuller sound !
It takes ALL kinds of voices.

And the more voices participating,
the greater the range of musical possibilities.

Don't miss the fun.  JOIN us!

Adult Choir

The Adult Choir rehearses @ 8 PM (till about 9 PM) on Fridays after the Stations of the Cross.

Why not come celebrate Mass with us?  Even at masses that the choirs don't sing, our superb Organist and Music Director (Mr. Gary Sabak) plays pre- and postludes at St. Valentine's beautifully restored pipe  organ. You'll be glad you did.

We encourage all our parishioners to participate in the singing of responses and hymns during all our masses. Please don't be shy about following along (sing or, just hum) in Gather (the green hymnal) or Breaking Bread (soft cover with the mass readings). By doing so, you will add so much to your celebration of each Mass.

"Sacred Music"

Picture
David playing his harp (unknown artist, c. 960). The book of Psalms, included in the Jewish and Christian scriptures, and written largely by David, is one of the earliest collections of sacred music, and still plays a role in the liturgies of the two religions.

Psalm 150

"Praise the Lord.

Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

 Praise the LORD."

We Are the St. Valentine Church Choirs

St. Valentine Church strives to be a local center of worship, fellowship, and service. We hold the celebration of the Sacred Mysteries central to our identity as a community of faith. The parish community of St. Valentine is devoted to service within and beyond itself, as it strives to deepen its own commitment to the Lord and to announce the Good News of salvation in Christ.

The mission of St Valentine Music ministry is to lead and uplift the community in sung prayer by way of embracing  the congregation's call to full, conscious, and active participation. While affirming and celebrating the unique diversity of our community, our music ministry acknowledges the Church's rich heritage of sacred music, and strives to complement it with the many resources of vocal and instrumental music from both the past, the present and our multicultural traditions.

About our Ministry

The Music Ministry of St. Valentine is made up of our directors, cantors and choirs.  While our directors and cantors often participate in many of the weekly masses offered in our parish church, the choirs sing with the congregation at specific weekend masses, holy days and special liturgical or sacramental events.

The Adult Choir provides an added dimension of spirituality allowing congregants to express joy in their faith through participation in the sung prayer of mass responses and sacred music.  The Adult Choir joins the parish at every 10 AM Sunday Mass for the months of September through May and occasionally for special events/masses. They rehearse and learn new music on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 PM in the church.

The Treble (Youth) choir participates in the celebration of every second Saturday, 5:30 PM mass.  They are girls and boys of CCD ages. They rehearse on Saturday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 PM on the stage in the church hall.

Both choirs employ a wide range of musical selection and style.

Our Recordings

The St. Valentine choirs have had the opportunity to be able to professionally record a number of musical selections for both the Christmas Season as well as pieces used in Ordinary time during masses and special occasions.

These commercially produced CD's titled, "Many the Gifts" and "Christmas at St. Valentine" make wonderful musical gifts. If you would like copies of either or both of them, they are still available for a customary donation.
Discuss your needs with Ms. Hannah Elarmo or any member of the Adult Choir.
