Saint Andrew Bobola - Feast Day May 16
Andrew Bobola (Andrzej Bobola, 1597-1657) was born in southern Poland and became a Jesuit priest. He formed a medical fraternity in order to tend to the needy during the time of plagues in Vilnius, Poland.
During a time of conflict between Catholics and Orthodox Christians and also a war between Poland and Russia, he was captured in Janów, Poland and given the option to renounce his religion. He refused and was tortured and martyred. Some of his countrymen recovered his body and put it below a Jesuit administered church in Pinsk (a city in current day Belarus). His body was eventually returned to Poland in 1923.
