Maximilian Kolbe - Feast Day August 14
Maximilian Kolbe, OFMConv, was a Polish Catholic priest and Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a man named Franciszek Gajowniczek in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II.
He was born January 8, 1894, in Zduńska Wola, Poland. He died August 14, 1941 at age 47. He was beatified October 17, 1971, by Pope Paul VI and canonized October 10, 1982, by Pope John Paul II.
