The theological virtues of faith, hope and love come from 1 Corinthians 13:13. The mysteries of the rosary are connected with each theological virtue and these symbols are found in our church. In 2021 the Feast of the Annunciation, the first of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, was celebrated on March 25. The sorrowful mysteries cover the events of Jesus during Holy Week, celebrated March 27-April 3 in 2021. Finally the first Glorious mystery, the Resurrection, is celebrated at the Easter Vigil April 3, 2021 and Easter morning April 4, 2021. Just like Jesus's life went from Joyful to Sorrowful to Glorious very quickly, so too do our lives and the lives of our families, friends and neighbors. As we celebrate Holy Week and the Easter Season may we reflect on the life of Jesus, the mysteries of the Rosary on our own lives as we wait in joyful expectation of the Resurrection.
The theological virtue of Faith is associated with the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary where the savior of humanity has come into the world as a human. Jesus is God incarnate, fully God and fully Human. The theological virtue of faith is shown by the symbol of cross. The joyful mysteries, dealing with Jesus coming into the world and His early years, foreshadow the cross.
The theological virtue of Hope is associated with the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. In Hebrews 6:19, hope is called the “Anchor of the Soul”, hence this theological virtue is depicted with an anchor. Even in the midst of suffering, there is hope in the saving power of God. Hope, as does an anchor, keeps us in place in the stormy seas of life.
The theological virtue of Love is associated with the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary because of the saving power of God whose love conquers death. The theological virtue of love is shown by the symbol of a heart, specifically one ablaze with love like the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
